What is Exercise Physiology?

Despite great progress in the last few years, we often still encounter confusion as to what Exercise Physiology is. Put simply, Exercise Physiology is the treatment of Clinical Health conditions using exercise. This means we use exercise as our treatment tool to enable people to manage and recover from a variety of physical and mental health issues. Some examples of chronic health conditions and disabilities that we may treat include; heart disease, type II diabetes, back pain, knee pain and other musculoskeletal conditions, neurological disorders, stroke, osteoarthritis, among others. Exercise Physiology is a powerful tool for change as the individual is actively involved in their treatment, we can’t complete the exercise for them but can safely guide them to manage their conditions. Over time this empowers the individual to take control of their health and progress towards self management. Exercise Physiologists undergo significant study and training and have completed at least 4 years of University study at undergraduate and post graduate level. Exercise Physiologists work closely with other professionals including Physiotherapists, Myotherapists, Osteopaths, Dieticians and General Practitioners. Accredited Exercise Physiologists are governed by Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA) and registered Exercise Physiologists can see patients through Medicare, TAC, Workcover, NDIS, Private Health and DVA.
